The bespoke dressmaking process usually takes around four to six weeks (though we have done it in less!). It consists of several stages including:
1. Initial consultation and measurements where you should ensure you have given as much detail to your dressmaker as possible about the garment you would like made. This can include drawings, photos, written notes, tear outs from magazines, etc.
2. After the initial consultation we will send you an estimate for the work and request a non-refundable deposit. In order to ensure the project continues on schedule, ensure the deposit arrives promptly.
3. Once we receive the deposit the dressmaker will commence work on your garment, including doing any drawings or sketches to illustrate the agreed design, sourcing materials and supplying samples (if required), creating a pattern and a toile (a pattern made from calico which can be adjusted before the actual fabric is cut). Any concerns you have about the style or major changes you require should be made at this point.
4. When you are happy with the toile, the dressmaker will cut into the actual fabric. It is likely that one or more fittings will be required in order to ensure the fit is correct. We include up to three fittings or meetings in the initial estimate.
5. Your garment will be finished and detailed as per the design and the completed garment delivered to you.
It is important to us you are completely satisfied with your bespoke garments, therefore any questions or concerns you may have about or throughout the process, please speak with your dressmaker or contact us.
It's a common misconception that having something bespoke made will be cheaper than buying it from a designer. However when something is made-to-measure the dressmaker has to start from scratch including making a pattern and toile, sourcing materials, doing individualised fittings and measurements, etc. Whereas designers have all of this done by teams, materials are sourced and bought in bulk and patterns only have to be cut once for the whole production. They also do not customise the garments to suit the individual and often the making up aspect is done abroad where labour costs are much lower. We do always endeavour to keep our prices as reasonable as possible however these factors all add to the equation.
In having a garment made by one of our expert dressmakers you can not only be assured you will receive a garment fitted for your shape and style but you will be involved directly with the dressmaking process and encouraging local talent and livelihood.
